What I have seen as tets manager is a huge influx of testers, that have simply shoehorned into the business by taking the ISEB Testing Foundation Certificate. The joke with this qualification is that you can pass it with no IT knowledge, as people can simply learn the coursework verbatim, and take the exam an inifinite number of times. This had led to numerous forums discussing previous tests, boasting of how many times the test was taken, and eventually passing by a mixture of fluke and dman persistence.

One of the testers I had the misfortune to have experience wrote defects up as a child would. It could have been written in crayon. Obviously he only lasted a few days, but I am sure he could get away with longer on another less demanding project. These people have created the perception problem, that people like me have to repair, and tediously often. Managers should be on the lookout for “ISEB Qualified” testers - you could be hiring someone that could cost you more than you thought possible.

With the intention to get a quick glance on what’s happening on the web while keeping the common newsreader clean from short-term headlines, popurls was launched in march 2006 by Thomas Marban, who is often mentioned for creating the original trend of “single page aggregators”. Rather than a tool, popurls is considered as a gate to an editorial selection of the most popular sites on the internet, presented in a usable way. After features on thousands of blogs and newspapers like the NY times, Yahoo! named it best of the web to finally enter the 30 most popular sites of all time on del.icio.us. Today, popurls is frequented more than 75.000 times each day.

Stories of terrible hosting companies abound on the internet. I was hosting my daughters blog site with them, and recently the site was shut down with no warning. What followed was firstly attempt to use Forgotten Password on their support site - after 10 attempts and no email, I tried the live support. The first tried to tell me that they didnt deal with that site, then pointed me to the billing site. I informed him (politely) that I had already jumped through that hoop. He then charmingly signed off. I talked to another 4 operators in total, all seemingly mistified. The last live chat helper said AQHost would send an email with details - still waiting 3 days later. I havent mentioned the numerous online support tickets raised that werent responded to - or the fact their “helplines” were either defunct or cut out after initial intro.

Thansk to AQHost my baby daughters blogsite is lost - I still have the photos of course, but what was just as precious was the words written with those photos.

Avoid this terrible hosting companies, and yet another one to add to the hall of shame!
